London Heathrow and Istanbul Airport Compete for Europe’s Top Spot as Passenger Traffic Climbs: All the New Updates You Need to Know

Passenger numbers are expected to continue their upward trend in 2025. London Heathrow Airport will remain the Number 1 airport on the continent, though. According to the recent report from ACI Europe, Istanbul Airport is likely to surpass Heathrow due to its significant growth. With an increase of 0.7% in 2025, Heathrow recorded 84.48 million passengers. Istanbul Airport has seen new growth of 5.5%, reaching 84.44 million passengers. With the slight difference in numbers, it is easy to see how Istanbul is expected to surpass Heathrow.

Heathrow and Istanbul Airports are experiencing a continuous rise in passenger traffic. This is due to the competing pressures from the investment and tourism going into the UK and Turkey. Heathrow has seen growth due to the increasing size of new aircraft. This is a vital consideration of the growing barriers to a fully operational airport in the UK. With pressures building considering the planning of a 3rd runway, it is currently expected that the runway will not be operational until 2035.

In contrast, Istanbul Airport, which began operations in 2018, has seen a rapid increase in traffic. Turkey’s 5.5% increase in traffic for the year 2025 demonstrates the positive trend that Turkey’s geographic location as a border between Europe and Asia provides. Additionally, post-Ukraine war geopolitical tensions have made Istanbul a key destination for travel to and from Russia. With a rapidly improving global network and state-of-the-art facilities, Istanbul Airport has virtually positioned itself as a key competitor in global aviation.

The rapid growth of traffic at Istanbul Airport has been a direct result of Turkey’s acquired position in the center of Europe and Asia. It has provided a unique and unchallenged market for airlines that need to service the two regions. In conjunction with the unification of Russia and Turkey, Western sanctions have dramatically increased Turkey’s utilization as a conduit for Russia to the world, specifically for the inflight travel between Europe and Russia. The combination of these factors has created a unique market that has firmly established Istanbul Airport as a major center for both global and regional aviation.

On the other hand, Heathrow’s growth is more dependent on European and international traffic and continues to have challenges regarding capacity. Even with the use of bigger planes to meet demand, the airport is restricted by the current runway system. The highly anticipated third runway, which is projected to boost Heathrow’s capacity, is still a decade away from being built. This could mean that, for the foreseeable future, Istanbul Airport can continue to grow.

The European airport industry is reporting a 4.4 percent increase in traffic in the year 2025. Confidence is understandably high, with a good amount of international traffic flowing in that wasn’t there the year prior. Post-lockdown travel restrictions have enabled people to travel by air more frequently, and the international traffic flow in Europe has been helped by a number of tourists from around the world, with border restrictions around the Europe continent lifted. More people traveling means travel is becoming an important discretionary spending priority. Regardless of the current geopolitical issues, air travel is essential to global movement and will continue to be the case until 2026. Global travel is steadily returning, and ACI Europe predicts 3.3% growth will normalize in 2026. This signals the end of rapid travel recovery during the pandemic. The new travel environment will be the ‘New Normal’.

In the next few years, Istanbul Airport is expected to become Europe’s busiest airport. With significant investments, Istanbul is poised to outpace Heathrow in expansion and use. Heathrow’s new third runway will unlock additional capacity, but is unlikely to become Europe’s busiest airport.

The upcoming years will be very important for air travel in Europe. The demand for international flights will most likely remain high for both airports. As an important transit airport for Europe, Asia, and Russia, Istanbul will continue to experience growth. London will continue to operate as an important airport in the European aviation industry, but it must implement its expansion plans in order to remain leading in the industry.

Airports in Europe will continue to hold the leading position in the world, but Europe will hold the leading position in the world for air travel due to the great number of people wishing to travel great distances via air. The demand for air travel will continue to experience great growth, but in order to control demand, air travel will need to be prioritized by the industry.
